what is HYGGE?

1. THE ART OF BUILDING SANCTUARY AND COMMUNITY, OF INVITING CLOSENESS AND PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT MAKES US FEEL OPEN HEARTED AND ALIVE;

2. TO CREATE WELL-BEING, CONNECTION AND WARMTH;

3. A FEELING OF BELONGING TO THE MOMENT AND TO EACH OTHER;

4. CELEBRATING THE EVERYDAY.

The Hygge Manifesto by Meik Wiking

Why such an emphasis on hygge?

As a social worker I inevitably incorporate my own experiences, beliefs and values into my work with clients. Beyond the education, training and work experience, who is this person that you are trusting with your private fears, struggles and life goals? For some clients, this may not matter. Others may be curious.

This is where HYGGE comes in. It not only summarizes my Danish upbringing in one word, but it describes the lens through which I see life:

  • Savour moments and experiences instead of things

  • Sensory experiences can bring feelings of contentment and safety

  • Soothing atmospheres can soothe the soul

  • Appreciate the small things

  • Be present

  • Take care of yourself

  • Engage with others in meaningful ways

It may not always be possible to follow every aspect of The Hygge Manifesto, but this Danish framework for daily happiness will forever rest in the back of my mind and will continue to influence my work with clients.
